With “The Beginning of the End,” The Contestants, which have graced us with some of the catchiest Portland-spawned songs of the last 15 years (see: “Blood” from the Braxeling Records sampler and “For the Sake of Argument” from the LP “Twelve of Your Earth Years”) prepare to move on to another iteration. This EP, recorded by the band, features five clean, rhythm-driven nuggets that, as with the band’s earlier work, evoke Sloan, Big Star and later-period Guided by Voices. The group — Scott Eggimann, Darin Fabrick, Josh Kirby and Jean-Paul Ramos — adds a little classic Contestants to the mix with “Dynamite,” which showcases the quartet’s love of melody, harmony and complex, but not annoyingly tricky, changes. A pleasant listen on an early fall afternoon, or, well, any season.
